But Personally I love serving with Vendhaya Kuzhambu.
Rice rava or akki thari is the main item of the rice upma recipe.

Ingredients of Rice Upma
- You need 2 cups of (riceKurnai/Noyyi in Tamil) broken rice that is rice rava.
- You need 5 cups of Water.
- You need 1/2 cup of Tur dal.
- It's 20-25 of Black pepper.
- It's 1 tbsp of Jeera.
- You need 4 of Red chillies.
- You need to taste of Salt as per taste.
- It's 1/4 cup of Grated coconut.
- You need For of seasoning:.
- It's As required of Oil.
- Prepare Pinch each of Mustard,urad dal(split),hing, curryleaves.
As a side dish, mango pickle or coconut chutney are fine choices. Puffed rice upma is an easy brunch & breakfast recipe made with puffed rice, spices, peanuts, onions and tomatoes. It a popular dish from the South Indian state of Karnataka and is also a street food. Arisi upma is made with raw rice and dal, we make it with toor dal (thuvaram paruppu) but I have seen people make with chana dal and moong dal too.
Rice Upma step by step
- Take rice wash it and transfer it in a stainer so that excess water is drained. After 10 to 15 minutes when the rice becomes dry, grind rice coarsely like rava. If you can not grind at home, buy broken rice called as rice noyi or kurnai in tamil which we can get from grocery shop. It will be little big in size so have to break it into rava form (after leaving it for 5minutes upon sprinkling water on it).You can use normal rice and follow this procedure..
- Take Toor dal,pepper, jeera and grind it coarsely in a mixer jar and keep aside..
- Here I am using pressure coooker.Now heat oil in a cooker,add mustard seeds when it splutters add urad dal,hing,red chillies and curry leaves.Fry till dal changes to golden brown colour..
- Now add rice rava,coarsely grinded toor dal mixture..
- At low flame stir it.Now add grated coconut and mix it.Add 5 cups water and required salt.Add water using the same measuring cup used for rice rava..
- Now close the lid of cooker.Pressure cook on medium to low flame for about 3 whistles..
- After the pressure releases from cooker open it and mix well..
- Serve hot Rice Upma with coconut chutney..
Very easy and simple recipe and one pot meal if you. Rice ravva upma can be prepared without vegetables too. All you need are spices like mustard Loaded with vegetables or without them, upma tastes great with just the seasoning of spices and its. Arisi upma is our family favorite recipe.
