Recipe: Tasty Mandakki oggarne (karnataka style puffed rice upma)

Puffed Rice Upma is also called mandakki oggarne in Kannada, pori upma in Tamil ,borugula umma or uggani in Telugu and also murmura upma in North India. Puffed rice upma is an easy brunch & breakfast recipe made with puffed rice, spices, peanuts, onions and tomatoes.

Mandakki oggarne (karnataka style puffed rice upma) Uggani, pori upma or murumura upma are the other names. It is mostly eaten with mirchi bajji or stuffed chilli bajji. Ingredients of Mandakki oggarne (karnataka style puffed rice upma)

  1. It's 8 cups of Puffed Rice (Kurmure / Mumraa).
  2. You need 1 1/2 cup of Chopped Onions (3 medium Onions).
  3. It's 3/4 cup of Chopped Tomatoes (2 small Tomatoes).
  4. It's 1/2 tsp of Turmeric Powder.
  5. You need 3 tsp of Roasted Gram Powder.
  6. You need 3-4 tsp of Jaggery/Sugar …. To be adjusted.
  7. Prepare 2 tsp of Lemon Juice.
  8. It's 3 tbs of Raw Peanuts.
  9. Prepare To Taste of Salt.
  10. It's of For The Tempering :.
  11. You need 3 tbs of Oil.
  12. It's 1 tsp of Mustard Seeds.
  13. You need 1/4 tsp of Asafoetida.
  14. You need 3 of Green Chillies…. Chopped.
  15. It's 1 Sprig of Curry Leaves.
  16. Prepare 2 tsp of Urad Dal.
  17. Prepare of For Garnishing :.
  18. It's as needed of Chopped Coriander Leaves.

Easy to make and yummy to taste, enjoy them as a breakfast or snack or light dinner. In this video I'm sharing a wonderful delicious tasty Karnataka special Puffed rice Upma (Uggani, Mandakki oggarane) traditional served with mirchibaji. But when tasted it was absolutely delicious. The upma was also very nice.

Mandakki oggarne (karnataka style puffed rice upma) step by step

  1. To Make the delicious Mandakki Oggarne, heat a pan and add oil to it for tempering..
  2. Add the mustard seeds, and as soon as they splutter add the asafoetida, green chillies, curry leaves and stir..
  3. Add the udid daal and saute for a few seconds..
  4. Add the chopped onions and saute. Cover and cook, which helps to hasten the cooking process..
  5. At the same time heat a small kadhai and add 2 teaspoons oil to it..
  6. Add the raw peanuts to the hot oil and saute for a minute on high heat and set aside..
  7. Now, check the onions and if they have turned translucent, add the turmeric powder and mix..
  8. At the same time, add the chopped tomatoes and mix well. Cover and cook till they turn mushy, which is done in almost 2 minutes..
  9. In the meantime soak the puffed rice in sufficient water for about a minute and drain immediately..
  10. Squeeze well and set aside..
  11. Next, add the roasted gram powder and jaggery to the onion tomato mixture and mix well..
  12. Add in the puffed rice, roasted peanuts, lemon juice and salt to taste and give it a good mix..
  13. Cover and cook, just for a minute and switch off the flame..
  14. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve this delicious Karnataka Style Puffed Rice Upma for a nutritious and quick breakfast!.

When I returned back and was going through the entries to WTML last month, I saw the recipe for puffed rice upma at Swasthi's blog. She also mentioned about the green chilly bajji and it is a famous dish in North Karnataka. This Puffed rice upma is also called Murmura uggani/marmaral upma/Puffed rice Upma. Its a popular breakfast recipe in Rayalsema and bordering districts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Its generally served with Masal vada or Mirchi Bajji.
